Omi ( Xiaomi ) is working on a new feature which will take soon the device, at least those intermediate models equipped with a lesser amount of working memory (RAM). For those devices, the operating system will offer to devote part of the file storage volume so that it can be used as a kind of “virtual memory”, and improve the performance of heavier applications, or run a large amount of applications at the same time.
Virtual memory is not a new idea, and veteran Windows users will probably remember that the operating system offered such a feature in its earlier versions – in the days when RAM of any kind was particularly expensive and most computers were equipped with a minimal amount, but still in use today. The Vivo manufacturer also already offers a similar feature in its V21 models, but now that Omi may bring the news to a much larger number of users.
The feature already exists in the beta version of MIUI 12, but is not enabled for any device. However, it can be seen in the operating system menus that currently, Xiaomi supports an expansion of up to 1 gigabyte of working memory “at the expense” of the available storage volume.
