As of this writing, Signal is at the top of the list of the most popular free apps for Android and iOS in many countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France and Germany. In Israel, it is currently in second place in the list of downloads for the iPhone, with Telegram in third place and WhatsApp only in fourth place. In the Israeli Play Store, Signal is in first place, Telegram in second place, while WhatsApp is far behind.
What undoubtedly contributed to the jump in popularity was a tweet raised by Elon Musk , CEO of Tesla and currently the richest man in the world, who recommended millions of his followers to switch to Signal. Signal Advance traded on the US stock exchange – but other than that it has nothing to do with the messaging app.
Signal itself is not traded on the stock exchange and in fact it is not a business company at all, but a non-profit association. This is one of the reasons that security and privacy experts believe that its services can be relied upon, as the association has no interest in selling information about its users or advertising space in the app.
